Baby critically injured when bassinet catches fire

The baby boy was only 12 hours old when fire burst out in his bassinet at Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids on Tuesday.

By Wednesday, the boy named Maverick was in stable but critical condition with burns on 17 to 18 percent of his body, as hospital and fire department officials scrambled to find out how an accident like this could happen.

Apparently, he was born 3 weeks early after a scheduled cesarean at 37 weeks. That is according to the news anchor, but wasn’t included in this story.

Perhaps if this story creates enough awareness of the possible damages that can occur with scheduling cesareans prior to 39 weeks, doctors will begin to refuse to perform them. But that won’t happen until news stories begin to broadcast the added danger, including how this baby should still be in his mother’s womb, away from these risks.
