Oh, baby: C-section on demand

Although doctors and researchers know many of these surgeries are medically needed to ensure a good outcome — as in Rivers’ case — there is some evidence to suggest a growing number of first-time mothers are asking for these procedures without a clear medical reason, raising concerns among some.
Dr. Tanya Itani Tavai, a pregnant obstetrician/gynecologist with staff privileges at Parrish Medical Center, agreed. She cited her sister’s difficult two-day labor, followed by an emergency C-section, in her own decision to have a planned C-section in mid-February.
“I’m more afraid of vaginal birth than a Caesarean,” she said, adding her sister endured “the worst of both worlds.”
Interesting article. It’s worth a read. It does list both sides of the argument, but glosses over any other motivating factors for providers willing to do elective primary cesareans (money, convenience, etc).
