Most Mums Left Alone to Labor in UK

 National Institute for Clinical Excellence Guidelines (NICE) state that a woman in labour “should not be left on her own except for short periods, or at the woman’s request.”

In the biggest ever survey of its kind, 57% of the 26,000 women surveyed said they had given birth lying down or with their legs supported in stirrups.

This also contradicts new NICE guidelines, which actively discourage the position for normal births.

Although 90% of patients said their overall quality of care was excellent, very good or good during labour and birth, there were large variations between trusts.

Liberal Democrat health spokesman Norman Lamb said the survey showed the “huge gap between Government promises and the reality in maternity units across the country”.
