Mother induced for large baby - leads to cesarean

Some wonder why I’m so opposed to induction for non-medical reasons, and I tell them it’s because I read birth stories like this on a daily basis. It would seem that if I’m able to connect the dots, doctors would be able to figure it out as well… but I suppose they’re too “busy” saving lives to bother realizing that inductions lead to fetal distress, failure to progress and ultimately, cesareans.

I was induced Thursday morning. Grace was a large baby (8 lbs 11 oz - the exact same as George), so I chose to induce George’s labor in order to prevent him from getting too big. I was was told by my obstetrician that she thought my labor would go quickly because I was dilated to 3 1/2 cm before I got to the hospital and after being induced I made quick progress. However, I never dilated past 8 cm. My doctor left me at 8 cm for 3 hours in hopes that George would come on his own, but as time wore on things didn’t look good. George’s heartbeat was dipping each time I contracted, his head wouldn’t go down, and he was turned. So, my doctor told me the safest thing to do was a caesarean section delivery. I shed some tears over this because I knew the recovery was going to be more difficult, but in the end I wanted a healthy, happy baby boy. I got what I wanted, but how in the world do I make such big babies!!

big babies? ha! mine was 7 lbs. 15 1/2 oz. and he wasn’t that big… and hers were only 4 oz. over mine… LOL! It is sad though that women don’t realize that inducing before ready will lead to c-sect. b/c thier bodies are refusing to give that baby up yet b/c it’s not ready! grrrr…. btw im from the BIN group on cafemom! i love reading your articals!!

The last comment on that blog entry was a gem:

C-section babies always look so great right after birth. I am glad that the delivery went alright- like you said, better to have a c-section and a perfectly healthy baby!

Yeah, that’s all that matters — that the baby looks pretty. *roll eyes*

You know what would be better than a c-section and a perfectly healthy baby? A birth that wasn’t medically managed to the extent that the baby went into distress and the mother had to be cut open.

Mothers need to be more educated about this kind of stuff. It drives me crazy. Both my kids were over 9lbs, I birthed them at home because my OB said I had a narrow pelvis and was probably going to have to have a c-section. Ha! I showed them. I refuse to set foot in a hospital when I deliver for just that reason. I don’t want medication, IVs, bells and whistles. I want nature to take its course and do what my body is intended to do: birth a beautiful baby!

I have 2 girls 6 and 4 years old. I had to have over 200 stitches with my first and she was only 7lbs 13oz with a small head. My 4 year old was a surprise and I told the doctors the whole time i was pregnant how scared i was. They told me that all labors are different. I still knew something was wrong. They even let me go a week overdue. I had her at 8lbs 6oz with vaccuum delivery because she was stuck. Yes i tore again and was bleeding a lot to the point of passing out twice afterwards. I am considering having a 3rd and trying for a boy but i am scared. I hear that induction can lead to a cesarean and don’t want that, but also don’t want to risk bleeding to death! any suggestions?

Got something to say?
