Retired Nurse, 71, Delivers Great-Grandson in Bathroom

A RETIRED nurse became midwife for a night when her great-grandson was born on the bathroom floor.

Supergran Dorothy Milne delivered little Callum after his mum Kelly was sent home from hospital after being told it was a false alarm.

But within an hour of getting home, the baby was on its way - and gran quickly took charge.

Kelly, 24, said: “It was a mad night for us all. Gran was amazing and really took control.

“When we got home, I went for a bath like the doctor said.

“When I came out, I didn’t feel right and told my partner to call 999 and gran.

“She arrived to take me to hospital but I felt the baby coming.

“Me, mum and gran were in the bathroom. Mum was on the phone to the ambulance service but she was in a panic and kept saying, ‘Oh, my God’.

“Gran told me to lie down on the floor and push while she did the rest.

“She was amazing. She kept a cool head and calmed me down. It all happened so quickly.”

Little Callum was born at 2.45am on Friday with Kelly’s partner Iain McMahon, 27, and her mum Caroline at the pensioner’s side.

Well, glory be. Another home birth without a “professional” in attendance and everyone miraculously survived. Honestly, where are all the news stories about babies born unexpectedly at home who died a horrible short death? Or where the mother bled out on her kitchen floor? Hmmmm….maybe because that almost never happens?????

These articles crack me up - yet another woman births with the people she loves and trusts and nothing bad comes of it. *sigh* there’s a lesson in there!

Got something to say?
