Study: Delayed Cord Cutting Benefits Baby

Many new fathers look forward to cutting their baby’s umbilical cord, but research indicates that waiting a few seconds for that special moment can help their baby.

A study done by the University of Rhode Island shows that waiting to cut the cord of premature babies led to less bleeding in their brains and less infections during their stay in intensive care.Researchers said it only takes a few extra seconds of waiting.

“We’re only talking about a brief delay of 30 to 40 seconds with lowering the little baby down, because gravity helps the baby to get more blood,” said Dr. Judy Mercer, a nurse midwife and professor at URI.
