Shelby Kee’s recovery from delivering her first child by Caesarean section in December was perfect, she said.
The incision made on her stomach didn’t leave a bad scar, and afterward, she wasn’t in as much pain as she expected, Kee said.
Having a C-section never scared her. In fact, when Kee was six months pregnant with her son, Tate, she requested one.
She wanted a C-section because she thought it would be more convenient.
Kee didn’t want to deliver her child on the actual due date, which was New Year’s Eve. Instead she chose Dec. 28.
“I went in at 7 a.m. and by 10 a.m., we had a baby. It was quick.”
Some doctors allow a woman to choose to have a C-section or a doctor may recommend it for health reasons.
Dr. Keith Williams, an OBGYN at the Jackson Clinic, said some doctors prefer to perform a C-section only if necessary. The decision varies from doctor to doctor, he said.
If a woman chooses to have a C-section, it’s important for her doctor to thoroughly explain its risks compared to a vaginal delivery, Williams said.
“Our general practice is that a vaginal delivery managed properly is still the best standard for care,” he said. “A C-section should be used as intervention for the mother and baby.”
More women are delivering babies by C-section although the procedure presents greater health risks and costs up to $500 more than having a child naturally. Nearly one in three pregnancies now end with a C-section, according to a 2008 report from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

Got something to say?

First thought: “Like, Gag me with a spoon!”
Second thought, how sad that women are choosing cesareans. After having 3 children a friend of mine was told she can’t have anymore because of her scar tissue from the 3 c-sections. Her and her husband both come from families with more than 7 children.
Cesareans are risky and they can affect breastfeeding and our family size.
